Here is a concise history of the city of Los Angeles that you probably never heard.

LA was not always a coastal city.

The combined effect of its population growth and tourism growth made Los Angeles the city it is today. Its leisure industry was working closely with economic spin-offs. The event was the choice made in the 1920s by the city elites. They abandoned the concentric radio configuration that had triumphed until then. Somewhat, they organized the city's growth and expansion in favor of urban sprawl. Various real estate operations transformed the coastline into a residential area. Promoters emphasized the seaside character of the room to attract new customers.

LA Beaches almost extinct.

The beaches were a structuring element to the development of the city of LA. Their popularity increased dramatically but quickly suffered a backlash because of the intense urbanization. Towards the end of the 1920s, they were saturated and polluted. The haphazard construction resulted in erosion which caused the entire sections of the coastline almost to disappear.

The birth of coastal engineering 

By the end of the 1930s, the people of LA formed a "beach lobby" of local elites, engineers, scientists, businessmen, and officials. It intended to fix these problems within the coastline. The first projects were carried out intuitively and gave somewhat mixed outcomes. Nonetheless, they allowed for the accumulation of experience and the refinement of knowledge. They laid the foundations for the "sand rush."

The expansion

The post-war period saw the implementation of primary coastal development functions. Firstly, guaranteed access to the public the beaches needed to be secured. Then they had to be broadened by depositing large quantities of sand. In 1948 alone, the city of Los Angeles extracted and moved 4 million tons of sand.

The results are precise. The operation allowed them to gain 180 meters of beach in Santa Monica. People cleaned the coastline. Authorities put a new wastewater treatment plant into service to fight pollution. After officials finally resumed the development of the beach, they installed recreational facilities and sports fields. From January to March: Red carpet fashion shows

• Golden Globes: 2nd Sunday in January. Sometimes considered the warm-up for the Oscars. The ceremony is held at the Beverly Hilton and completely blocks the Beverly Hills area.
• Grammy Awards: 2nd Sunday in February. The Grammy Awards take place at the Staples Center. Give awards to the best musical artists and technicians.
• Oscars: last week of February. Watched by a billion viewers, there's no need to introduce the Academy Awards ceremony. Register in September to hope to win one of the 700 Red Carpet fan bleacher seats. These allow you to stand in front of the Dolby Theatre.

From April to June: Time for music

• Coachella: mid-April. Considered the avant-garde of music and fashion. Coachella is the event that opens the festival season. Takes place in Indio, east of Los Angeles. Welcomes more than 125,000 festival-goers. Including celebrities to watch in the VIP areas.
• Cinco de Mayo: May 5. Mexico's biggest holiday. In L.A.'s Latino neighborhoods, such as Olvera Street, past victories are commemorated. Music and margaritas in the streets until the wee hours.
• Doheny Blues Festival: mid-May. South of L.A., a blues festival known throughout the country. Famous musicians like B.B. King played there.
• LA Pride Week: early June. A whole week of parties and concerts. Extravagant parade on Sunday to defend the rights of LGBTQ+ communities.
• LA Film Festival: 2nd half of June. Filled with the most beautiful windows and more than a hundred feature films are presented during this film festival. To everyone's surprise, it doesn't take place in Hollywood but in Downtown LA.

From July to September: Surfing and art

• Independence Day: July 4th. The U.S. Independence Day Fireworks Show is held each year at the Hollywood Bowl. A concert and incredible fireworks display take place in a beautiful outdoor setting.
• International Surf Festival: early August. A large gathering of sportsmen from 8 to 80 years old who compete in surfing, paddle, or volleyball.
• Los Angeles County Fair : 3 weeks in September. Huge popular fair, the largest in North America. Brings together exhibitors of art, textiles, technology, and products of all kinds. Highlighting L.A.'s counterculture. Concerts and a funfair are also part of the event.
• Abbot Kinney Festival: last Sunday in September. Art fair, sale of products from independent stores. Concerts and activities for children on the street considered the coolest in the USA.

From October to December: End of year celebrations

• Halloween: October 31. More than 500,000 people in costume take part in the West Hollywood Halloween Costume Carnival. They parade down Santa Monica Boulevard on the West Hollywood side.
• Hollywood Christmas Parade: Thursday after Thanksgiving. On Hollywood Boulevard and Sunset Boulevard. Visitors and showbiz stars rub shoulders for the media parade of the year in the run-up to Christmas.

Door screen materials have definitely been much improved from a century or so ago, where horse hair was used to create barriers from invading bugs.  Starting in the 1920s, textile looms were modified to weave strands of metal, and galvanized steel screens became much more common in homesteads.  Galvanized steel worked well as window and door screens for several years, but since steel tends to rust over time, a new metal eventually took over for galvanized steel -- aluminum.

Aluminum Window Screening

Today's aluminum screening is a very rugged, metal mesh of aluminum wire. To make this aluminum “fabric”, a large aluminum rod, 3/8-inch in diameter, is drawn out to create a long, extremely thin wire, around 0.011 millimeters thick. The manufacturer then carefully winds this wire onto specialized bobbin.  They then load this bobbin of aluminum wire into a loom modified for metal wire, and gets the machine started to weave aluminum fabric.  Once the machine is done weaving the aluminum fabric, it is given a clear coat finish for protection and added shine.

Bronze Screening

You can also get window and door screens made from bronze wire that is composed of 90 percent copper and 10 percent zinc.  this option is usually more expensive than aluminum, but is does not corrode as easily as aluminum does.  This is very useful in coastal areas, where the sea air tends to wear out aluminum screening more quickly.  When newly installed, bronze screening will have a bright golden shine. The bronze will eventually take on a beautiful turquoise verdigris patina, further enhancing the beauty of the screen door or screen window

Fiberglass Window Screening

Vinyl-coated fiberglass, the newest and most popular screen fabric material, will not rust, corrode, or stain, and can even stretch, but it does tear more easily than aluminum screens will.  A spokesperson at Phifer Wire Products, one of the country’s largest screen manufacturers, explains the fabrication process: “We start with raw spun-glass filament and apply a vinyl (PVC) coating, producing remarkably strong single strands that are typically 0.011 mil for window screening and 0.013 mil for pool enclosures, patio rooms, and some door screening.” This type of screening is available in a multitude of colors, and can be easily made for projects such as retractable door screens, porch screens and coverings, or any unusually shaped openings that require a window screen.

Solar Screens

One of the newest developments in the past decade in fiberglass and vinyl screens are Solar or “sun” screens.  This screen material is also made from fiberglass coated in vinyl. The tightly woven solar screening material can help save a house a lot of energy when installed, because it works to help block heat buildup inside a house, which in turn helps to lower your air conditioning needs, and your energy bill. Due to the thick material, you may lose some of the light that a screen can afford -- some can reduce lighting by up to 30 percent.  This also helps to keep your carpets and furniture from looking faded and old, due to sunlight exposure. In fact, you can even get window and door screens that block a staggering 90 percent of sunlight, if desired.  During the day, solar screens look nearly opaque when looking from the outside in, but still offer good visibility when looking from the inside out.
